Unit: Quadrilaterals

Standard: VIII

Objectives of unit

  • Student will be able to recognize different types of quadrilateral, solve problems based on properties of quadrilaterals
  • To make use of/apply the properties of quadrilaterals
  • Thinking Skills Given any quadrilateral student identifies and tell the properties.

Essential Question

  • Define different types of quadrilaterals

Content Questions

  • The opposite sides of a parallelogram are ---------
  • The diagonals of a rhombus --------- --------
  • The --------- of a rectangle are congruent
  • Find the length of diagonal QS of a square PQRS if the length of diagonal PR is 8cm.
  • The diagonals LN and MT of parallelogram LMNT intersect in point O. If l(MO)=5cm, l(LN)=6cm, find l(OT) and l(NO).

    Square

    • Definition
A quadrilateral with all congruent sides and each angle a right angle is called a square.

    • Properties of a square
    • Diagonals
    • of a square are congruent
    • Diagonals of a square bisect each other
    • Diagonals of a square intersect at right angles
    • Each diagonal of a square is the perpendicular bisector of the other

Rectangle

  • Definition
A quadrilateral with each angle a right angle is called a rectangle

  • Properties of a rectangle
  1. The opposite sides of a rectangle are congruent
  2. The diagonals of rectangle are congruent
  3. The diagonals of a rectangle bisect each other

Rhombus

  • Definition
A quadrilateral having all sides congruent is called a rhombus

  • Properties of rhombus
  1. The diagonals of a rhombus bisect each other.
  2. Each diagonal of a rhombus is the perpendicular bisector of the other.
  3. The opposite angles of a rhombus are equal.

Parallelogram

  • Definition
A quadrilateral which has opposite sides parallel is called a parallelogram.

  • Properties of a parallelogram
  1. The opposite sides of a parallelogram are congruent.
  2. The opposite angles of a parallelogram are congruent.
  3. The diagonals of a parallelogram bisect each other

Kite

  • Definition
The diagonal that joins the points of intersection of the congruent sides of the kite bisects the other diagonal at right angles.

Trapezium

  • Definition
The quadrilateral in which only one pair of opposite sides is parallel is called a trapezium.
